What are dentures?
Dentures are custom made appliances to replace a person’s missing teeth and help to restore oral appearance and function. They are removable so the individual and take them in and out as they please. Dentures can be made of porcelain or acrylic resin which offer a variety of advantages and disadvantages and depends mainly on the needs of the patient.
How are dentures made?
An impression of the patient’s gum is taken in order to create a mold by which to construct the dentures. This mold will serve as the wax model to which the teeth will then be added. Dentists always test the model in the patient’s mouth to ensure that the size and color is suitable and that the plate fits properly inside the mouth.
A full denture is used when an individual is missing all of their teeth while a partial denture is used when there are select few teeth missing. There are a variety of reasons why someone would need dentures, and although it is common in elderly individuals, dentures are necessary for people of all ages for a variety of circumstances.
